Onimusha Way of the Sword Issen Guide: How to Counter Attacks

You are in the middle of a boss fight. You try to land perfect counterattacks, but you cannot get the timing right. Want to know why? The answer lies in the Issen system. Issen is a counterstrike performed at the moment the enemy commits to its attack.

The Issen has been the heart of Onimusha since the 2001 original and it survives the 20-year gap intact in Way of the Sword. What changed is everything around it. Musashi now carries one katana, enemies have a stamina gauge and the single flashing counter has grown into a family of three moves.

The moves are Issen, Chain Issen and Break Issen. That is the whole pattern you should learn!

Onimusha Way of the Sword Issen: What Is It?

An Issen is a critical counter-strike. You press attack in the split second before an enemy’s blow would land on Musashi. He cuts first.

The reward is heavy damage plus a bigger release of souls for the Oni Gauntlet to absorb.

Capcom did not attempt to soften the window. It is the tightest timing in the game. Mistiming it means eating the attack you were trying to answer. Use it when you are sure you can do it on time. Counting works well for me, but I suggest finding your own pattern for timing attacks.

Issen has an important role in the game lore. For Instance, to face the Secret Boss (Byakue) of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, you have to farm 10 Issen kills and complete the demo.

Onimusha Way of the Sword Issen controls

Check which control scheme you are on, because Way of the Sword ships with an unusual default and half the “I can’t land Issen” complaints come from people fighting their own muscle memory.

  • Aggressive (default). Your two attack buttons sit on Triangle and Circle. Square handles blocking, parrying and deflecting. If you came from Sekiro or Souls, this will feel backwards for the first hour.
  • Defensive (alternate). The traditional layout. Light attack on Square, heavy on Triangle, and defense moves to L1. This is the one most returning action-game players switch to.

On Xbox, read Triangle as Y, Circle as B, Square as X and L1 as LB. On PC, the scheme is mirrored on keyboard, and Steam Input lets you remap it, though the on-screen prompts will keep showing the original icons.

Either way, the Issen input itself is the same: press attack, not block, in the split second before the hit lands.

How to land Issen in Onimusha Way of the Sword

Watch the swing, not the enemy. The input goes in on the frame the hit would connect, not when the animation starts, and not after you have already flinched.

Blocking, parrying and deflecting are separate tools, but they are not walled off from Issen the way they first appear. A held guard will never give you one. That is just eating the hit safely. A last-moment block that flashes will, if you attack the instant you see it. Every clean parry shaves stamina, which is the road to Break Issen.

The only inputs that lead nowhere are a panicked held block and a roll away from the fight.

Chain Issen

Land an Issen, then immediately input another attack and Musashi carries the cut into a nearby enemy. The window on the follow-up is tighter than the original Issen. With this method, I could outmatch roughly three targets. Therefore, treat it as a crowd-clearing tool rather than an infinite chain.

Break Issen: A New Feature for You!

This one is new. Every enemy has a stamina gauge, and when you drain it completely, Break Issen becomes available. It is a cinematic execution that runs through the game’s dynamic dismemberment system.

Director Satoru Nihei explained the reasoning directly: traditional Issen demanded frame-perfect timing and Break Issen lets players reach those signature attacks in a much wider range of fights. It rewards pressure instead of precision.

Stamina drains from a few sources. Two-handed attacks hit it hardest, though they are slow enough to punish you if the read is wrong. Parries and Blade Barrage chip at it too.

Where Issen fits in the combat loop

The whole game runs on one cycle. Read the attack, answer it, spend the opening, absorb the souls that fall out, repeat.

Issen sits at the payoff end of that loop, and Break Issen sits at the end of the slower grind toward a stagger. Ignore stamina and fights drag on; ignore souls and your Oni abilities run dry.
