If you’re like me and want to know what really happens in this newly released story DLC, here’s the entirety of Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations story explained.
Spoiler warning: Suffice it to say, this is a full-blown story explanation of the game. If you haven’t played the game or want to experience the story firsthand, you don’t want to go any further. Other than that, surely you have a lot of questions and here’s what happens.
What You’ll Read Here
What Happens Before the Revelations DLC Begins?
Bishop Kreed’s betrayal has already shaken the Nine Sentinels and now doubt spreads through their ranks. Khan Maykr, Mother-God of the faithful, who now senses rebellion, returns from beyond Argent D’Nur to restore order.
Hell is weak since Ahzrak fell, so the Slayer moves to land his final blow and break its throne. Thira helps the Slayer uncover a path to the High Council deep in the Dark Realm, but the chamber is sealed and only the Oracle can open it.
The Slayer’s Trial
At the beginning of the Revelations DLC, the Hell Priest tells the Slayer that if he manages to beat this trial, he can earn himself a spot before the High Council, as written in the Book of Ashes. Thira, in the meantime, reports that Valen has secured the crypt entrance, but she can no longer send support without the Khan’s approval.

Once the Oracle is aboard the Slayer’s ship, Khan Maykr appears and blames his defiance for Argent D’Nur’s chaos. Her solution right now is a new symbol for the Sentinels: Marok, son of Valen, who has pledged loyalty to her. Together, she says, of course, they’ll strike down the Order of the Six.
The High Council’s Judgment and the Henchman Boss
The Slayer fights through the Proving Grounds and uses the Oracle to guide him toward the Council’s chamber. When Doomguy enters, the Hell Priest presents him, but the Council says his past sins hold no power there. We have a brief flashback cutscene here that hits him hard.
The Council rules him unworthy of leaving, so he’s sentenced to stay entombed forever. Instead, the Slayer shoots the priest into eternity, but somehow he disappears and an unholy creature worthy of the name Henchman rises from the ground.

He’s the Council’s self-proclaimed vessel, which is cool to be honest. This time, though, it beats the Slayer and sends him down to Purgatory, which, I have to be honest, made me feel a little disappointed to see Doomguy lose like that.
The Architect and the Three Ascension Stones
A spider-like being called the Architect rescues the Slayer and explains he must find three Ascension Stones to unlock his own suffering and move between realms. The Slayer claims the first inside Hell’s Core and ignores Khan Maykr’s warnings.

He then, while chasing the second, encounters a frozen corpse and touches it. He sees a vision of King Novik’s soldiers searching for him, worried they’re being watched. He finds that stone inside the Chasm of Xal’Goroth, a labyrinth built to test his mind and will. Vague visions of his family’s death and his pet rabbit named Daisy keep surfacing along the way.
Marok’s Boss and the Praetor Suit
When the Slayer touches King Novik’s corpse, it triggers a vision of Novik trying to stab Khan Maykr after she claims peace is possible without the Slayer around. Marok stops him. Back in the present, Marok blocks the Slayer from placing the third stone. There you begin your Marok boss fight.

In mid-fight, Khan Maykr reveals to a dying Marok that Novik knew the Slayer caused his death, then revives Marok to keep fighting.
When Marok finally falls, the Slayer hesitates, and Khan Maykr calls him “useless,” only to push Marok to stab himself and explode. The blast has the Slayer nearly fall off the platform, but The Architect saves the Slayer again, then forges the Praetor Suit with the power of all three stones.

The Henchman Second Boss Fight
The Slayer, while carrying King Novik’s axe, comes into the presence of Khan Maykr and holds it for Thira. She holds it for herself and sees a vision of Novik’s murder at Marok’s hands while Khan Maykr watched and did nothing.
Khan Maykr then confronts the Slayer and claims Hell can only be controlled and never defeated. She then, in classic villain fashion, offers salvation one last time. Our great Slayer, of course, rejects her offer, and The Henchman final boss begins.

The Slayer surely takes care of this horrendous-looking abomination for good. That pretty much sums up the entirety of the Revelations DLC story campaign. If you want to read more about how the story wraps up, we have a dedicated Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations Ending Explained article.
