Project: Mist is a survival game (solo or 1-4 player online co-op), where you are on a mysterious island riddled with dangerous giant monsters. The atmosphere and the name are reminiscent of Stephen King’s The Mist. So if you want a classic post-apocalyptic experience, this game is for you. But survival is not easy here. So read this Project: Mist guide to learn everything you need to master this game.
Disclaimer: Project: Mist released as Early Access on May 19, 2026. So this trending game guide may change over time with later releases.

Core Survival Mechanics
Survival in Project: Mist is not easy. You have to balance 4 basic needs while fighting monsters. Here is how it works:
Manage Vitals & Stamina
You need to track your Health, Stamina, Hunger and Thirst. If your hunger or thirst bars become empty, your health slowly drains.
Stamina affects your combat and movement. So each time you dodge attacks (with the Alt key) or sprint away from threats, stamina is consumed. You also have a strict weight limit of around 80 kg. If you carry too much, you will become heavy and movement will become difficult.
Pro-tip: Let your armor take damage first. Food heals you and fills your hunger bar at the same time. Maximize that value.
The Gravity Gun
The Gravity Gun is your best survival tool. It is not just a standard weapon. You use it to clear massive debris blocking your path. You can also use it to turn anything into a weapon. How?! You can pick up random objects with its hook and launch them at enemies. It even lets you move objects to build quick cover or reach hidden loot.

Lockpicking Ability
Opening locked chests is its own minigame inside the game. You hold Left-Click and the Spacebar to expand a central node. If that moving node touches the outer walls, your lockpick snaps. The final lock is always the easiest. You do not have to safely shrink the node back down to the start to win.

Essential Upgrades
Take your Blood Orbs to a biological upgrade terminal. You spend them here to permanently increase your survival stats.
Focus on increasing your Maximum Health, Max Shield, Carry Capacity, and Movement Speed. These are the real game changers. You can also equip Trinkets and Artifacts found in the world. These items give passive buffs like reduced stamina drain or extra weapon damage.

Economy and Farming Blood Orbs
To survive the island, you have to get stronger. That means the game’s economy system should not be neglected. Blood Orbs are your main currency. You can collect them by killing standard enemies and looting chests. Even small aggressive bugs and mutant frogs drop light orb clusters.
You can also visit “The Chum” trader. Sell your unwanted junk, like old boots or extra sticks to him for some quick cash. Save up these orbs to buy major equipment like the Gravity Gun.
Train Base Crafting
Your train is your moving headquarters in Project: Mist. It constantly pushes you deeper into the hostile island. So you have to be smart. Do not just build random structures. Prioritize your builds in this order:
Build storage first. You want your materials sorted early so you never get left behind on gear upgrades. Next, upgrade your train defenses. You need strong walls before you drive into high-danger zones. Finally, add your utility stations. Workbenches are essential to keep you alive on long expeditions.
Essential Cooking Recipes
Raw food barely keeps you alive. You need a cooking station just like in real life.
Mix wild flora with cave critters or spider parts to make Suspicious Looking Stew. This weird dish grants a massive 52% flat damage reduction. You can also mix mushrooms, blueberries and herbs to cook Vegetable Stew. It restores a huge chunk of your hunger and thirst meters.

First-Hour Project: Mist Guide Walkthrough
Treat your first hour in the game as a trial-and-error sandbox. Here is exactly what you need to do.
Escape the Starting Room
You wake up in an isolated bunker. A stern radio voice gives you directions. Loot the small starter chest to get your baseline tools. Craft a basic axe and smash the padlock on the door. Scavenge everything before you leave. Door barriers can bug out and lock you out permanently. Use the menu to manually save your game right here.
Find the Mech Parts
Follow your compass markers toward the train station. Watch for vertical arrows that show elevation changes. Cross the Midway Bridge to claim your train. Unfortunately, its engine is completely dead. Look at your map and head directly west. You will find a destroyed mech hanging off a cliff. Scavenge it to grab the Train Parts Kit.
Infiltrate the Greenhouse
The train gate is locked down. You need a physical override card to open it. Head to the agricultural dome known as the Greenhouse. Dodge the acid floor traps inside. Clear out the local infected targets and grab the Access Card.
Bosses & Enemy Threats
The island is full of massive threats. You must learn their patterns and how to handle them to save your life and your ammo.
Ignore The Leviathan
The Leviathan is a massive beast floating high in the clouds. This giant sky whale siphons energy straight from thunderstorms. It is completely peaceful by default. Do NOT provoke it! If you attack it, you have zero chance of survival. Keep your distance and let it pass.
How to Beat the Chomper Boss
The Chomper is the first major boss you fight inside the Greenhouse. Do not waste ammo on its head or legs. It does not take much damage from standard body shots.
You have to circle around it and target the glowing blood tanks on its back. Shoot your heavy weapons and explosives into these tanks to break them down. Be ready to clear out the smaller infected enemies it vomits onto the battlefield.

That’s all you need to know to get started. The rest depends on your survival instincts. Come back to this Project: Mist guide anytime, if you have more questions, and I’ll find the answer for you ASAP.
