Shift at Midnight Endings Explained: How Many Are There?

Shift at Midnight endings have people confused, and it’s not hard to see why. Beat all thirteen shifts and the game barely explains what just happened to you. Is there one true ending, or did you just get unlucky? There are three outcomes, and they come down to one brutal choice near the end. Here’s how it all happens.
Spoiler Alert: This article spoils both Shift at Midnight endings. Proceed with caution.
What You’ll Read:
How Many Shift at Midnight Endings Are There?
Bun Muen hasn’t published an exact number, and Steam’s store page just says the story mode wraps up with “a handful” of finales.
After countless hours of watching every playthrough online, I found out there are at least three, depending on how you handle the store and whether doppelgangers slip past you. It all comes down to this: can you afford your pet’s surgery or not?

What Actually Decides the Shift at Midnight Ending
Your pet gets sick early in the story and needs medicine every few nights. By the final shift, the medicine stops working, and the vet says he needs surgery instead, which usually costs somewhere around $200 to $250, due within three days.
If your personal store earnings cover that bill by the deadline, you pay it yourself. If they don’t, you get a new email telling you surgery is out of reach and hinting at another way to save your pet. Whichever path happens, night 13 ends the same way: you head to the vet and find out whether the money came from you or from somewhere else.

Grave Decision Ending: Call Clyde
As I mentioned before, if you come up short on cash, you’ll get an email saying surgery’s out of reach unless you call the sheriff and get Clyde Dawson to visit the store. Do it, and an “anonymous source” covers the full bill. The email never spells out the cost. You find out at the end.
Finish Night 13, and the game cuts straight to a funeral for Clyde. You didn’t kill him yourself. He sacrificed himself, but the game makes it clear you’re the one responsible. Your pet lives, joins you in Endless Mode, same as the True Ending, but Clyde’s gone for good. It’s the same “saved the pet” outcome on paper, minus the guy who used to bring you beer.

Empty Home Ending: Don’t Call Clyde
What happens if you don’t call Clyde? You guessed. It’s the opposite of when you do call him. Clyde will stay alive and still bring you cheap beer. But you can’t save your pet. This was the most heartbreaking ending I’ve seen. I hope you don’t get it.

True Ending Achievement: Keep Your Pet and Clyde Alive
This is the good ending, and it’s simple on paper: save up enough of your own money to pay the surgery bill yourself. Every run I’ve seen hit this ending also cleared night 13 with no humans killed and quota surpassed. So keep both conditions going into the final shift.
Pay the bill, and the vet confirms the surgery worked. Clyde Dawson still shows up afterward with cheap beer and old stories, none the wiser about what happened at the gas station. Your save file flips to Post-Story mode, and your pet joins you permanently in Endless Mode. No sacrifice, no catch. You just need the cash.

Shift at Midnight Ending Achievements
| Achievement | Requirement |
|---|---|
| True Ending | Keep both your Pet and Clyde alive |
| Grave Decision | Let Clyde die in exchange for your pet’s life |
| Empty Home | Save Clyde and don’t have enough money to save your pet’s life |
All endings show up right after the vet visit on night 13. So you’ll know your ending before the credits roll. Which ending did you get? Let me know if you were lucky or not in the comments below.
FAQ
Does killing a human block the True Ending?
Not necessarily. Runs that hit the True Ending still had a stray human kill or two on earlier nights. What matters most is clearing night 13 itself with quota met and no humans killed.
Is there a worse ending than Grave Decision?
Nothing confirmed yet. Steam and community previews hint at a third outcome tied to doppelgangers escaping, but no footage so far shows anything beyond True Ending and Grave Decision.
Do doppelgangers escaping affect your ending?
Bun Muen has said choices around suspicious customers feed into the ending system, but every documented run still comes down to the same surgery bill fork, regardless of how many doppelgangers got through.
