As a teenager, fishing was one of my favorite hobbies. My brother and I spent our spare time fishing in the lake near our villa. Now, Scale the Depths brings all those good memories back. It genuinely makes me wish I could be a kid again.
Among the many fish in Scale the Depths (one of the trending games of these days), there is one called the Red Herring that is genuinely rare and takes real effort to track down. It reminds me of an actual quest from my childhood: there was a fish in that lake that my brother and I both wanted to catch but never did.
The Red Herring shows up in two spots: Outer Banks (inside a sunken ship) and Loch Ness (near a yellow flag). It is hard to find, so your best bet is to reset the map by exiting and re-entering.

Where to Find Scale the Depths Red Herring
It took me about an hour and a half to find the Red Herring. I had to reset the map two times and wait for about half an hour to 45 minutes to get it to spawn. However, in the end, the impossible mission was accomplished!
Outer Banks
Outer Banks is the go-to spot for players hunting this rare spawn.
Swim straight to the sunken ship. You will recognize it by the chain and anchor attached to it and the Red Herring spawns inside the wreck.
Since the spawn rate is so low, sitting around and waiting is a waste of time. Instead, use the GPS reset trick: check inside the wreck and if the Red Herring is not there, open your GPS and re-enter the map. That resets the whole instance and respawns every fish. Repeat until it shows up. Players say this can take close to an hour.
Loch Ness
If you would rather hunt in Loch Ness, the Red Herring hides in the middle of the lake. Dive straight down from your boat toward the area just below the junction leading to the yellow flag.
Keep an eye on your depth. If you can see the three pyramid-shaped barrels, you have gone too deep and need to swim back up.
Loch Ness has its own reset trick and it does not need the GPS at all. Just enter and exit the fish-prepping station to force a respawn. Some players have found their first Red Herring simply by going up and down to collect and prep fish along the way.
A Road to Prep Expert Achievement!
Once you finally catch your Red Herring (and the other fish you find along the way), you will want to handle them properly.
The Prep Expert achievement (0.1% unlock rate) in Scale the Depths requires perfectly processing every fish species in the game.
Simply running Red Herring through the prep station is not enough for Prep Expert. You need a clean, undamaged catch every time. A few players have also reported the achievement not popping even after a flawless run. Therefore, if it does not unlock right away, try to re-prep a fish or two before assuming something is wrong.
